🏝️ Ginger Island: Golden Walnuts, Volcano Farm & 100% Completion

Pro Tip

You only need 101 Golden Walnuts found (100 counted) to open Qi's Walnut Room, but every reward costs walnuts too - 116 buys all of them, and the final 14 walnuts convert into 28 Qi Gems, so nothing on the island is ever wasted.

Unlocking the Island

Ginger Island unlocks after you complete the Community Center bundles (or the Joja Community Development form), when Willy mails an invitation to the back room of his Fish Shop. The broken boat there needs 200 Hardwood, 5 Iridium Bars and 5 Battery Packs for its hull, anchor and ticket stand; after an overnight repair cutscene, boat tickets cost 1,000g each way. Once the Farm Obelisk is built on the island (or you craft Warp Totems: Island), you can skip the fare entirely.

The Walnut Economy

Golden Walnuts are the island's only currency, spent at parrots for everything from shortcuts to buildings. There are exactly 130 in the game. Buying every parrot reward takes 116 walnuts, and any leftovers convert to Qi Gems (2 per walnut) at Qi's Walnut Room - so no walnut is ever wasted.

Two numbers to remember: reaching 100 walnuts unlocks Qi's Walnut Room (technically you must find 101, because the first walnut does not count toward the total), and the parrot in Leo's hut gives free hints for 123 of the locations. If you truly give up, the Golden Joja Parrot west of the volcano will buy each remaining walnut for 10,000g.

Priority purchases: Island West access (10), Farmhouse (20), Volcano Bridge (5) and Volcano Exit Shortcut (5), Island Resort (20), Parrot Express (10), Dig Site bridge (10) and Island Trader (10), then the Farm Obelisk (20) and mailbox (5).

Where All 130 Walnuts Come From

| Source | Walnuts |
|---|---|
| Buried dig spots, bushes and hidden paths across all four island areas | 39 |
| Volcano Dungeon (rocks, monsters, metal crates, chests, forge entrance/exit) | 19 |
| Gourmand Frog (grow Melon, then Wheat, then Garlic, in order) | 15 |
| Island Field Office fossils and surveys | 13 |
| Gem Birds shrine puzzle (rainy days) | 5 |
| Fishing anywhere on the island (15% per cast) | 5 |
| Harvesting non-regrowing crops on the island farm (5% per crop) | 5 |
| Mining Mussel Nodes on the west beach (10% each) | 5 |
| The Pirate's Wife quest for Birdie | 5 |
| Mermaid Flute Block song on a rainy day | 5 |
| Pirate Cove darts (3 wins) | 3 |
| Tiger Slime Grove Simon Says cave | 3 |
| Banana placed on the altar by Leo's hut | 3 |
| One-offs (Leo's tree, first Golden Coconut, mole whack, starfish tide pool, jungle bush) | 5 |
| Total | 130 |

Tips: buy the Parrot Express early so hints turn into fast travel; the Mermaid puzzle is tuned 2-11-9-5-7 (or one click less per block) by stone counts; and Journal Scraps found on the beach unlock dig spots that produce nothing until read.

The Volcano Dungeon and the Forge

The Volcano has ten floors. You need a watering can to solidify a lava path on the way in (after your first clear, a parrot sells a permanent bridge for 5 walnuts). Floor 5 holds the Dwarf's shop, and floor 10 is the Forge - the endgame upgrade bench. Verified costs:

  • Gem forging a weapon: one gem per level, costing 10/15/20 Cinder Shards by level; a Diamond fills all remaining levels for only 10 shards. Ruby adds damage, Emerald speed, Aquamarine crit chance, Jade crit power, Topaz defense, Amethyst knockback.
  • Random enchantment on a weapon or tool: 1 Prismatic Shard + 20 Cinder Shards.
  • Combining two rings: 20 Cinder Shards.
  • Forging 3 Galaxy Souls (plus 60 Cinder Shards total) into a Galaxy weapon transforms it into its Infinity form.
  • Unforging is free and refunds some shards.

After Combat Mastery you can craft a Mini-Forge and do all of this at home. Cinder Shards drop from volcano rocks and monsters throughout - bring bombs to farm them fast.

The Island Farm and Trader

The island farm has 876 tillable tiles (776 on the main field), grows any crop in any season, and suffers no crows - but Junimo Huts cannot be placed there, so it is a manual-harvest endgame field, usually ancient fruit, starfruit or pineapple under bulk Iridium Sprinklers.

The Island Trader (unlocked for 10 walnuts after buying the Farmhouse) barters instead of selling for gold. Key stock: Banana Sapling for 5 Dragon Teeth, Mango Sapling for 75 Mussels, Pineapple Seeds for 1 Magma Cap, Taro Tubers for 2 Bone Fragments, the Deluxe Retaining Soil recipe for 50 Cinder Shards - and, on the last day of each season, one Galaxy Soul for 10 Radioactive Bars (requires having killed at least 50 dangerous monsters). Galaxy Souls are the gate to Infinity weapons, so plan Radioactive farming around that date.

Qi's Challenges and Perfection

Qi's Walnut Room (at 100 walnuts) is the island's endgame hub: a Special Orders board, a Qi Gem vending machine, and the Perfection Tracker that grades your completion percentage.

His repeatable orders include: Qi's Hungry Challenge (reach Skull Cavern floor 100 without eating; 25 Qi Gems), Skull Cavern Invasion (floor 100 with dangerous monsters; 40 Qi Gems, then a statue at the entrance toggles permanent hard mode), and Danger in the Deep (dangerous Mines, unlocking the Shrine of Challenge on floor 120 and its Radioactive Ore economy).

Perfection - the 100% on the tracker - requires every Golden Walnut, all five skill masteries, shipping every item, deep friendship across town, and more; finishing it unlocks the Summit scene and the Statue of True Perfection. Check the tracker often: it doubles as the most honest to-do list in the game.
