💰 Best Ways to Make Gold in Every Stage of the Game
Pro Tip
Take Tiller at Farming 5 and Artisan at 10 - the +40% artisan bonus turns a 96-tile Ancient Fruit greenhouse into roughly 220,000g per week, and you can always re-choose professions later at the Statue of Uncertainty.
Early Game (Spring Y1): Parsnips and Fishing
Early gold is about compounding small edges. Reinvest everything into seeds: Parsnip (20g seed / 35g sell, 4 days) has the fastest turnover, Potato (50g/80g, 6 days, with bonus-potato chances) the best value, and Kale (70g/110g, 6 days) sits between. A player who recycles parsnip profits weekly ends spring with several thousand gold from farming alone.
The bigger engine is fishing. On rainy spring days the river produces Catfish (200g base) and the ocean gives Eel at night; any day, the mountain lake holds Largemouth Bass. Even junk-tier fish fund your first backpack and tool upgrade, and the Fisher profession (+25% fish value) at Fishing 5 doubles down on it. Sell fish raw early - artisan processing comes later.
Free income players forget: Salmonberries (Spring 15-18) and Blackberries (Fall 8-11) shake off bushes by the dozen, and the wood, sap and fiber from farm clearing sell or convert into machines. Do not farm flowers or forage for gold - they are worth far more as gifts.
Mid Game: Preserves Jars, Kegs, Hops and Ancient Fruit
At Farming 4 you unlock the Preserves Jar (fruit becomes Jelly, vegetables become Pickles, worth 2x base + 50g); at Farming 8 the Keg (30 wood, 1 Copper Bar, 1 Iron Bar, 1 Oak Resin). The rule of thumb: Preserves Jars win on speed and low-value crops, Kegs win on high-value produce - the break-even is a base price of about 50g for fruit and 200g for vegetables.
Hops are the mid-game money printer. A 60g starter matures in 11 days, then produces every single day; each Hops becomes Pale Ale worth 300g (420g with the Artisan profession) after roughly a day and a half in a Keg. A modest hops field plus 20-30 kegs comfortably clears 8,000-10,000g per day through summer and fall. Kegs do not have to live on the farm: a basic Shed holds 67 of them, a Big Shed 137, and many players line the road or desert with more.
Ancient Fruit is the long game. Dig an Ancient Seed from an artifact spot (or buy from the Traveling Cart), donate it to Gunther for the crafting recipe, then multiply seeds with the Seed Maker (about two seeds back per fruit). The plant matures in 28 days, regrows every 7 days forever, and each 550g fruit becomes wine worth 1,650g base, 2,310g with Artisan.
Late Game: The Wine Empire and Cellar Aging
Starfruit is the peak per-unit crop: 400g seeds from the Oasis, 13 days, 750g fruit - which becomes 2,250g wine, 3,150g with Artisan, and 4,500g (6,300g Artisan) aged to Iridium quality in a cask. The final farmhouse upgrade adds a cellar with 33 casks (an optimal layout reaches 125); wine takes 14 days to Silver (x1.25), 28 to Gold (x1.5) and 56 total to Iridium (x2).
With a repaired Greenhouse planted to 96 Ancient Fruit under four Iridium Sprinklers, the weekly harvest becomes 96 wine = 158,400g base, or about 221,760g per week with Artisan - roughly 31,000g per day from a farm that waters itself. Ginger Island then adds 876 year-round plantable tiles on top.
Late-game gold also flows from Crystalariums duplicating Jade (trade to the Desert Trader on Sundays: 1 Jade = 1 Staircase), deep Skull Cavern iridium runs, Sturgeon ponds producing Caviar, and the 1.6 Fish Smoker, which sells smoked fish at double the fish base price.
Gold per Day Comparison
Approximate income by venture (base prices unless noted; quality, professions and processing raise these):
| Venture | Setup cost | Approx. income |
|---|---|---|
| Spring parsnip cycling | ~1,000g | 1,500-3,000g per season |
| Spring fishing (rainy river) | Free rod | 2,000-3,000g per day |
| Summer blueberries, 100 plants | 8,000g | ~20,000g per season raw |
| Hops field + 25 kegs (Artisan) | ~15,000g | ~7,500g per day |
| Greenhouse 96 Ancient Fruit + kegs (Artisan) | Months of setup | ~220,000g per week |
| Starfruit + cellar aging to Iridium | 400g per seed | 4,500-6,300g per cask slot |
| Deep Skull Cavern iridium run | Bombs + staircases | 30-100 Iridium Ore per day |
The pattern to internalize: raw crops scale linearly, artisan goods multiply value by 2-3x, and automation (sprinklers, sheds of kegs, the island) is what turns multiplication into a passive income curve.
1.6 Money Tools: Mastery, Smokers, Dehydrators
Version 1.6 added several accelerants once the Mastery Cave opens. Golden Animal Crackers (Farming Mastery) permanently double a single animal's produce - feed one to each coop and barn star. Treasure Totems (Foraging Mastery) summon a ring of dig spots you can strip-mine for artifacts and ore to sell. The Statue of Blessings grants a daily buff that regularly includes money-adjacent boons, and the Statue of the Dwarf King speeds up ladder generation in the mines.
Cheaper 1.6 tricks: the Fish Smoker recipe (10,000g at Willy's) doubles raw fish prices and pays for itself in days if you fish; the Dehydrator turns low-value berries and foraged fruit into dried fruit worth far more than the raw input (Strawberry dried fruit alone is 925g per unit); the Deluxe Worm Bin churns out sellable bait daily. Fairy Dust instantly finishes whatever a machine is processing, which is ideal for closing out a big cask batch on shipping day.
Common Money Mistakes
- Selling Ancient Fruit or Starfruit raw: you are discarding two-thirds of the value. Wine them.
- Skipping the Artisan profession (+40% on all artisan goods). If you took the wrong branch, the Statue of Uncertainty in the Sewers re-opens the choice for 10,000g.
- Building one Keg and calling it done - keg income scales almost linearly, so build sheds full of them.
- Aging everything to Iridium when cash flow matters: Silver (14 days) is often the better turnover.
- Selling iridium ore and bars early; they become Iridium Sprinklers, tool upgrades and Galaxy-tier gear.
- Planting Starfruit in summer before you own enough kegs to process it - raw starfruit is barely half as profitable as blueberry wine per tile-week.
